WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — November 5, 2026. The West Hollywood City Council has approved an ordinance creating a local domestic partnership registry for relationships involving more than two partners. The unanimous council action, reported this week by LAist and the Los Angeles Times, extends the city’s approach to recognizing different family structures. It does not change California marriage law or create a statewide legal status equivalent to marriage.

What the ordinance aims to provide

Under the municipal framework, participants may obtain certain local protections or recognition, including provisions connected with hospital and jail visitation and some tenant protections. These are specific local measures rather than a guarantee of all state or federal benefits available to a spouse or state-registered domestic partner. Anyone relying on the registry for housing, employment benefits, inheritance or medical decisions should verify which legal documents and local rules apply.

A local decision, not a statewide rule

The city is known for local civil-rights policies, and supporters say formal recognition can reduce uncertainty for families who do not fit the conventional two-person domestic partnership model. The legal scope matters: no California city council can, by local ordinance alone, rewrite the state marriage code or federal benefit rules. The ordinance is one decision by one city, and implementation details may require additional administrative steps.

Questions still to watch

Residents should look for the city’s published registration procedures, effective date and limits on specific protections. California58 will distinguish the council’s approved policy from services available at the clerk’s counter, which may be phased in later.
